Dan Choi Will Reenlist in Military

20 Sep

Outspoken gay rights champion and former infantry officer Dan Choi plans to reenlist in the army following Tuesday’s official repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, a policy which forbade openly gay people from serving in the armed forces.

“Going back to the military will be a vindication,” Choi said. “[I’m] going back because I fought to go back. The seriousness of our claims was not just political theatre – it was really drawn from our lives. I sacrificed so much so I could go back.

Choi was a former army lieutenant who served in Iraq between 2006-7 and came out publicly on Rachel Maddow‘s  show in 2009. He has made an appointment to speak with a recruiter later this week, but isn’t sure what role he would serve if accepted back into the armed forces.

The federal policy officially ended on September 20. In one of the more dramatic moments, a soldier called his father in Alabama to tell him about his sexuality. The video appeared on YouTube:

3 Great International Songs

19 Sep

I’ve gotten hooked on Spotify recently. One of the features I love allows you to surf the most popular songs in various countries across the world. That’s how I stumbled on some of these great songs.

1. Ju Mer Dom Spottar by Kapten Rod: When I first stumbled on this song, I kind of thought it was a joke. I mean, Swedish rap? But apparently I’m wrong. Kapten Rod is a big deal there. I wrote a tweet to the Atlantic saying they should do a story about Swedish rap.

To my surprise, The Atlantic wrote back.

Check out the song here:

2. Poika by Poju: So apparently this song celebrates the Hockey World Championships. I don’t know, it reminds me of songs from the late 1990s with that electrobeat. Sounds upbeat and fun though.

3. Meglio Prima by J-Ax: I’ve followed J-Ax for a while now. He was a member of the influential Italian rap group Articolo 31 and I was super-pumped to catch a glimpse of him with my group in Baia Imperiale this summer during our trip.

Well, he has a new song out and it’s pretty awesome (even if it is impossible to see the music video in the United States).

2 Examples of Extreme Overcrowding in China

19 Sep

Most people already know that China is the world’s most populous country with more than 1 billion people. Well, here’s two examples of how the country deals with having that many people they need to care for.

1) 66 Children In One Small Van: Police officers in Hebei Province stopped a small van that they suspected of carrying too many children. Inside, they found 66 young schoolchildren crammed into a space that was supposed to carry eight people at most. Someone had removed the backseat and placed four wooden benches in its place. The police provided 12 vans to get the children home safely.

2) That is One Swimming Pool: This scene comes from Daying county in Sichuan province. An underground lake has “salt content is similar to that of the real Dead Sea.” Apparently one hour inside is equivalent to eight hours of sleep. Thus, the crowds of people come.

Foo Fighters Brilliantly Taunt Westboro Baptist Church

18 Sep

Hours before they took the stage in Kansas City, the Foo Fighters pulled up in a pickup truck, decked out trucker hats, wigs and fake bushy beards, to serenade members of the Westboro Baptist Church who were protesting their concert.

Their impromptu set featured a song called “Keep it Clean,” which includes the line “I’ve got a hankering for something, think I’m in the mood for some hot man-muffins.”

The Westboro Baptist Church, led by rapid anti-homosexual preacher Fred Phelps, called for protestors to picket the concert because the band promotes “fornication, adultery, idolatry (and) fags.”

Frontman Dave Grohl took to the mic in the middle of the song and said, “I don’t care if you’re black or white or purple or green, whether you’re Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian, Lady Gaga or Lady Antebellum, it takes all kinds!”
