Tucker Barnes Gives Grossest Hurricane Irene Weather Report

28 Aug

Poor Tucker Barnes. The WTTG reporter was on Hurricane Irene watch yesterday evening and was forced to give a live report as he was being covered with a mysterious, gross-looking foam.

Apparently this foam stuff is “highly unusual,” consists of some “organic matter” and “doesn’t taste great.” Yuck! Hope he didn’t consume too much of it.

What is this stuff? Well, apparently it likely comes from raw sewage that seeped into the water during the hurricane. It consists of toxic mix of pollution and cyanobacteria.

Barnes also added that the foam “doesn’t smell great.” He did several reports surrounded by the foam. Hopefully he gets a bonus for this gross reporting.

Hilliard’s Newest Washington Brewery

20 Aug

I first read about a new brewery opening in Ballard yesterday in Seattle Met magazine. When I was in the neighborhood today, I decided to check out the location and see what was up.

Slated for a September release, Hilliard’s is the name of the latest brewery to open in Washington. With the opening (and a couple of other recent ones) the state now boasts more than 150 breweries open for business. Pretty incredible.

Hilliard’s is in the more industrial section of Ballard. It’s located right around the corner from NW Peaks Brewery, a company I wrote about for the Seattle Business Magazine.

According to the Met, the brewery plans to offer “a hoppy, American-style amber and a saison farmhouse ale” as their first two brews. They plan to bottle almost exclusively in aluminum cans, still a bit of an oddity in the market.

Welcome to Ballard! Can’t wait to stop in.

Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” at 8 am

20 Aug

Who hasn’t been in this position before? You’re riding a form of public transit, heading to a long day of work. You have your music playing and just want to sing… but can’t. Well, this guy embodies that dream.

Here’s why this clip rocks:

1. The guy is riding a bus in Jersey City at 8 a.m. and starts belting out “California Gurls” by Katy Perry (you might remember the many parodies of this song already out there?).

2. Katy Perry is totally hot right now. She actually just set a record with 5 number one hits off one album. Her album “Teenage Dream” has given the world “California Gurls,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” “Teenage Dream” and most recently “T.G.I.F. (Last Friday Night)” (I called that one). The only other artist with an album like that? Michael Jackson.

3. This guy has a Walkman. Mega retro points.

4. “California Gurls” is an epic song choice. Would only have been better if he sang Snoop Dogg‘s part.

Before you ask, yes, there is an autotuned version with added instruments.

Horrible Alabama Sorority Recruiting Video

19 Aug

This video was created by the Alabama Panhellenic as a recruitment tool. Apparently the people who created this bizarre mix of rapping and Rebecca Black thought it would convince more girls to sign up for Rush Week. Do you think it works? I half wonder if this was done poorly intentionally as a way to attract more attention. People must now think, “If I make a video so bad that it goes viral that will attract as much, if not more attention, then a really great video.”

Could that be a new model for publicity? Of course, I doubt the people making this video ever believed it would go this big. In the meantime, this is cringe-worthy.
