5 Best “Call Me Maybe” Parody Videos

28 May

An earworm called “Call Me Maybe” has swept the United States over the past couple of months (major points to Gawker for TOTALLY calling it). The song is, pretty much, the definition of the perfect pop song and its success proves it. Carly Rae Jepsen, the singer of this ballad, is nearly ten years older than fellow Canadian Justin Bieber, but the Biebs spotted her first.

Anyways, the song is pretty awesome and has spurred an unending supply of parody/lip sync/ weird cover versions. Here are the five best.

1) Bieber and Believers: Justin Bieber and his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, apparently had a pretty wild night with some fellow tween stars. They capped it off with this amazing, low quality cover that prompted everything else to be done.

2) Katy Perry: In what has to be the oddest collection of friends ever, Katy Perry sings (and provides hilarious commentary) to the infectious song. Look out for Zooey Deschanel too (apparently she’s famous?).

3) Violin Cover: Don’t know why, but this is kind of fun.

4) Harvard Baseball and Every Other Sports Team Ever: This video now has around 1/8 of the total views of the real video. A bunch of guys from the Harvard baseball team were clearly bored, and prompted EVERY SPORTS TEAM IN THE COUNTRY to record one of these videos.

5) Staples Center Crew: I flag this one because it’s the perfect use of social media to raise awareness of your brand. It’s something fun for the staff that utilizes something everyone is talking about. Oh, and cheerleaders, if that’s your thing.

Katy Perry Covers “Niggas in Paris”

19 Mar

Pop princess Katy Perry apparently has a thug side. Who knew? She appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge where she covered Kanye West and Jay-Z’s popular “Niggas in Paris.”

What do you think of her censored version of the rap classic?

10 Weirdest Musical Collaborations Ever

27 Jan

Let me be clear— I really like unusual and creative ideas. Especially in music. Some of these work. Others don’t. But they’re all fun and show how awesome collaborations can be.

1) “Over and Over”— Nelly ft. Tim McGraw: Probably the best known song on my list, this song was unquestionably the most successful. This song hit number 3 in 2005.

2) “Dirt Road Anthem (Remix)”— Jason Aldean ft. Ludacris: Reversing it up from the first song on this list, we look at a country song with a rap verse sprinkled in. Atlanta rapper Ludacris made this remix of Jason Aldean’s number one country hit unforgettable.

3) “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”— Aretha Franklin ft. Keith Richards: Bet you didn’t know the Queen of Soul decided to take on one of the Rolling Stones’ classic tracks. She did, and Keith even helped her do it.

4) “Street Rock”— Kurtis Blow ft. Bob Dylan: Music legend Bob Dylan raps. Need I say more?

5) “The Gambler”— Kenny Rogers ft. Wyclef Jean: Take one of the classic songs of rock and roll, then add some Haitian hip-hop. Sounds pretty awesome, right?

6)”Gone Going”— Black Eyed Peas ft. Jack Johnson: Hip-hop’s bad boys (and Fergie) decide to lay down some beats with Hawaii’s soulful wonder boy.

7) “Party for Two” — Shania Twain ft. Mark McGrath: I don’t know, something about “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer Twain with the guy who sings “Every Morning” from Sugar Ray is weird. Am I crazy?

8) “California Gurls”— Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg: I’m sorry, I know this song was huge, but really Snoop? Can you say sellout? He might have actually traded in all of his street cred to make it. Then there’s the behind-the-scenes video, which is just awkward and weird.

9) “Can’t Stop Partying”— Weezer ft. Lil Wayne: Um, yeah, no words for this really. Except Wayne is sick on this verse.

10) “Revolver” — Madonna ft. Lil Wayne: Yeah, Lil Wayne on any pop song seems to make the potential for weird increase. Singing with the 1980s original pop princess is just weird (but again, I think it works). He also dropped some sick rhymes for JLo.

Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” at 8 am

20 Aug

Who hasn’t been in this position before? You’re riding a form of public transit, heading to a long day of work. You have your music playing and just want to sing… but can’t. Well, this guy embodies that dream.

Here’s why this clip rocks:

1. The guy is riding a bus in Jersey City at 8 a.m. and starts belting out “California Gurls” by Katy Perry (you might remember the many parodies of this song already out there?).

2. Katy Perry is totally hot right now. She actually just set a record with 5 number one hits off one album. Her album “Teenage Dream” has given the world “California Gurls,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” “Teenage Dream” and most recently “T.G.I.F. (Last Friday Night)” (I called that one). The only other artist with an album like that? Michael Jackson.

3. This guy has a Walkman. Mega retro points.

4. “California Gurls” is an epic song choice. Would only have been better if he sang Snoop Dogg‘s part.

Before you ask, yes, there is an autotuned version with added instruments.
