Trader Alessio Rastani’s Interview Heard Round the World

28 Sep

Trader Alessio Rastani appeared on the BBC News a couple days ago and shocked the world with his incredibly blunt and stereotype-confirming account of the recession. Among the things he said:

If I see an opportunity to make money, I go with that. For most traders, we don’t really care that much how they’re going to fix the economy, how they’re going fix the whole situation. Our job is to make money from it. And personally, I’ve been dreaming of this moment for three years. I have a confession which is: I go to bed every night and I dream of another recession. I dream of another moment like this. Why? Because people don’t seem to remember but the ’30s depression — the depression of the 1930s — wasn’t just about a market crash. There were some people who were prepared to make money from that crash. And I think anybody can do that. It isn’t just just for the elite, anybody can actually make money. It’s an opportunity.

Many people initially suspected that Rastani was a member of the Yes Men, a group of comedians (?) who impersonate corporate figures and mock their heartlessness. Their most famous appearance occurred in 2004, when one of them appeared on the BBC impersonating a Dow Chemicals spokesman and announced a $12 billion settlement for the Bhopal disaster.

When reached by Forbes for comment, Rastani denied he was a fake. “I don’t know why they think it’s a hoax. No, I am a trader absolutely. I have trader friends who could back that up. One of my mentors is a bestselling author and trader. Everyone knows me.”

The BBC also investigated that possibility, but determined Rastani was completely genuine, “[We] can’t find any evidence to suggest that the interview with Alessio Rastani was a hoax. He is an independent market trader and one of a range of voices we’ve had on air to talk about the recession.”

Basically, he’s just an ass.

Michael Jackson death photo

The Los Angeles District Attorney released the first death picture of music legend Michael Jackson, as part of the opening arguments in the involuntary manslaughter trial of the star’s personal physician Conrad Murray.

Prosecutors allege that Murray provided Jackson with “propofol as part of a lethal cocktail of drugs then abandoned the singer to make calls and return emails the morning of June 25, 2009.”

A tape of Jackson clearly heavily under the influence of some drugs was also entered into evidence during the opening statements. The recording was allegedly made on May 10, 2009.

Incredible Queen, Pearl Jam, Nicki Minaj Covers

26 Sep

So the Internet has given us some pretty awesome performances of some of our favorite artists and songs over the past week. The highlights?

1) Javier Diaz (Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam): Appearing on the Chilean “Mi Nombre Es,” Diaz covered Pearl Jam and sounded almost identical to Vedder. Impressive, no?

2) Marc Martel (Freddie Mercury of Queen): Martel is part of a Christian rock group from Saskatchewan, Canada called downhere. Well, despite that inherent contradiction, he sounds identical to Mercury…The song is “Somebody to Love.”

3) moymoy, Roadfill and Rhian Ramos (Nicki Minaj): Say what you want, this lip sync is AMAZING. Wonder what Nicki thinks of this? Best of the year by far. These guys are from the Philippines by the way. Song is “Super Bass.”

Dan Choi Will Reenlist in Military

20 Sep

Outspoken gay rights champion and former infantry officer Dan Choi plans to reenlist in the army following Tuesday’s official repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, a policy which forbade openly gay people from serving in the armed forces.

“Going back to the military will be a vindication,” Choi said. “[I’m] going back because I fought to go back. The seriousness of our claims was not just political theatre – it was really drawn from our lives. I sacrificed so much so I could go back.

Choi was a former army lieutenant who served in Iraq between 2006-7 and came out publicly on Rachel Maddow‘s  show in 2009. He has made an appointment to speak with a recruiter later this week, but isn’t sure what role he would serve if accepted back into the armed forces.

The federal policy officially ended on September 20. In one of the more dramatic moments, a soldier called his father in Alabama to tell him about his sexuality. The video appeared on YouTube:
