Steve Jobs Dead at 56

5 Oct

Legendary Apple co-founder and technological innovator Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56. He had waged a public battle against pancreatic cancer for the better part of a decade.

Jobs was a visionary who fundamentally changed the way people interact. The iPod, iPad and iPhone are just a couple of his inventions.

The company’s Board of Directors posted a short message online. “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

A statement from the Jobs family said tech visionary passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. “In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.”

Tributes poured in from around the world, including the White House. “Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it… The world has lost a visionary.”

Microsoft c0-founder Bill Gates offered his condolences to the family and paid tribute to his longtime rival. “The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.”

Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page said Jobs’ focus on the user experience influenced him as he launched the world’s greatest search engine. “I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it.”

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote a short statement on his wall. “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo paid tribute in a tweet. “Once in a rare while, somebody comes along who doesnt just raise the bar, they create an entirely new standard of measurement.”

Speaker of the House John Boehner used Twitter as well. “Steve Jobs changed the world for the better w/ his innovations & genius. R.I.P.”

Here’s a collection of celebrity reaction to the sad news.

Lastly, for those people who have not seen it, here’s Jobs addressing Stanford University in 2005. His speech is moving and well-worth a look.

R.I.P. Steve. You truly changed our world.

Michelle Obama Shops at Target

Michelle Obama Target

Michelle Obama still gets to do something ordinary on occasion, even in her role as First Lady of the United States. That apparently includes popping over to Target in suburban DC to do some shopping.

Obama stopped in Alexandria, Virginia to shop (though honestly what she could have bought is beyond me). She pushed her own cart and was only recognized by the person checking her out.

“It was so quick,” Maria Panagopulos, store manager, said. “We only realized it was her at the end of her visit. She was incognito. The team was really excited. We hadn’t had an Obama family member since the beginning of his term as far as we are aware.”

“Teach Me How to Dougie” Rapper Murdered

16 May

Rapper M Bone, a member of the California rap group Cali Swag District, was gunned down last night as he sat in a parked car outside of a liquor store. He was 22.

As the rapper, whose real name was Mante Ray Talbert, sat in the driver’s seat of a car a burst of gunfire erupted from another car. M Bone was shot two times in the head, but a passenger in the car was not injured. The group’s publicist said that M Bone was the victim of random street violence.

The incident occurred in Inglewood around 10:30 p.m. The Cali Swag District burst onto the national scene with their infectious dance hit “Teach Me How to Dougie” last year. The song eventually hit number 28 on the charts, and remained in the top 10 rap songs for several months. Celebrities ranging from CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer to First Lady Michelle Obama have performed the dance.

“I’m crushed. I feel awful. I just want to go sit in a corner. I just lost one of my best friends,” said JayAre of Cali Swag District. “I’ve been with this dude every day for like two years, and like I’m never going to see him again.”

Police have not yet arrested a suspect.

As part of her “Let’s Move” campaign, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama took headed to International Baccalaureate School in Washington DC for a flash dance workout. Among the songs that played were a re-worked Beyonce song (which was re-done for the Let’s Move campaign). Obama danced throughout the songs and even Dougied when the time came up.

Plane Carrying Michelle Obama Forced to Abort Landing

19 Apr

A plane carrying First Lady Michelle Obama and Joe Biden’s wife Jill Biden was forced to abort a landing and circle Andrews Air Force Base after an air traffic controller allowed the VIP plane to get too close to a large cargo plane.

The trouble started as the plane carrying Obama and Biden arrived from New York. Controllers knew the plane was high priority, but ordered the plane to do a series of maneuvers to create more space between it and the cargo plane. As the First Lady’s plane approached the runway, though, the large cargo plane remained on the runway.

FAA rules require planes to remain 5 miles apart to ensure safety. Due to an error at a regional airport, the two planes in today’s incident got within 3 miles of each other. That’s too close. That said, members of the First Lady’s staff were not even aware that anything out of the ordinary was occurring.

The incident comes at an especially bad time for the FAA. Over the past couple of weeks, numerous reports have emerged of air traffic controllers falling asleep while on duty. Just yesterday, a controller was fired after he accidentally streamed audio from a movie to all aircraft in the surrounding area.
