2 Unbelievably Stupid Tweets

11 Mar

The power of social media allows us to share information quickly and share news with one another. Twitter is a large part of that sharing process. At the same time, allowing us to post information instantaneously often removes a critical period of evaluation that used to exist before publishing something. That’s a lesson two people have learned the hard way.

1) State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley: In this case, Crowley somehow thought this tweet made sense. It reads, “We’ve been watching hopeful #tsunami sweep across #MiddleEast. Now seeing a tsunami of a different kind sweep across Japan.” So, he compared the volatile situation in Middle East to the 8.9 earthquake that could have killed thousands of people in Japan. Just stupid. But apparently saying stupid things is nothing new to Crowley.

2) Unnamed ex-employee of Marketing Firm: An employee with access to the Chrysler official Twitter feed accidentally posted something to that account instead of his personal one.

Now, this is particularly bad since the company just spent millions on a Super Bowl campaign that touted its people, driving and cars. The marketing employee was promptly fired, but the marketing firm, New Media Strategies, will not have its contract renewed by the car giant at the end of this year. It shows that one erroneous tweet can cost you an important account. All it takes is a second.

The Elderly Should Not Talk About Pop Culture

Alan Simpson

Former Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyoming) is a co-chair on President Obama’s debt commission. Last fall, that committee issued a series of tough recommendations, some of which involved cutting Social Security and Medicare programs. Well, he’s been defending his recommendations. Today on Fox News he discussed the cuts. While urging the elderly to help make the future for their children and grandchildren, he somehow launched onto this rant…

“If they care at all about their children or grandchildren, and sometimes I doubt that — I think, you know, grandchildren now don’t write a thank-you for the Christmas presents, they’re walking on their pants with the cap on backwards listening to the enema man and Snoopy Snoopy Poop Dogg, and they don’t like them”

In a non-related note, John McCain may not be as tech savvy as you might think. During an appearance on “This Week” the Arizona Senator said that iPads and iPods are “built in the United States of America.” As most people know, they are actually built in China. His office later said that the senator recognized the devices were designed in the USA, but made elsewhere.

Eminem Third Ever to Hit 1 Billion YouTube Views

23 Feb

Eminem— Detroit Rapper

Eminem joined a very select club this past week, though he might not welcome his company. Along with Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, Eminem now has 1 billion views on YouTube. Despite many critics claiming his career was on the decline, the Detroit rapper proved them wrong in 2010.

His latest album Recovery landed 10 Grammy nominations and 2 Grammy awards, and sold more than 741,000 copies in its first week. That album landed him his three most frequently watched YouTube videos: “No Love” (46 million), “Not Afraid” (203 million) and “Love the Way You Lie” (292 million).

The artist has made the transition to the digital age. Three million Twitter followers, 29 million Facebook fans and topping Billboard’s Social 50 in 2010 prove that.

For a while it seemed like third place to one billion views might go to Michael Jackson. When Justin Bieber hit one billion views last year, the King of Pop had 600 million. He’s lagged behind since then though (he’s at 630 million now).

Contending for forth place include artists like Shakira, Britney Spears and Rihanna.
