Amazing Bread Lady of Manzanillo

22 Mar

How about a little blogging related to where I’m vacationing this week. We have set up shop in Manzanillo, Mexico, which is located in the state of Colima. It’s located right on the Pacific coast and survives mainly thanks to tourists. Many American and Canadian retirees come down here for extended stays because of the friendly locals and good exchange rate (12 pesos per dollar). Anyways, our days are mainly full of fun in the sun, playing in the waves and short walks into the little village to buy food.

However, one of my favorite parts of the day actually occurs at night. Every evening, the time varies daily, a lady comes up and sets up a mobile bread and pastry box on one street corner located by our hotel. This year she’s become even younger, and even comes with a friend sometimes. Now, they cannot be older than 16. Anyways, that’s not the important part. Her little box appears for a couple of hours on the corner and she sells breads.

As you can see from the picture, the box is fairly small. We’re not sure where the bread comes from (we haven’t found any bakers nearby), we don’t know how they come up with their selection and it’s also not clear how they price it (seems to change daily). Most of the bread is quite good, probably not the best in Mexico but pretty good coming from the little bread box on the corner. I feel fortuitous to have found her.  Check out Darcy and Cassie browsing the selection:

I don’t think a lady like her could operate in the United States.

Darren Taylor Jumps 36 Feet Into 12 Inches of Water

Professor Splash sets new world record

From 36 feet above the pool, Darren “Professor Splash” Taylor jumped. Now that would not be impressive, but he jumped into 12 inches of water. Not only did he survive, he set a world record in the process. The event occurred in Trondheim, Norway and dozens of people turned out to see the Professor jump.

In related news, apparently shallow diving is a thing.

Reporter Ben Higgins Nearly Killed on Live TV

21 Mar

Ben Higgins

This is pretty unbelievable. San Diego sports reporter Ben Higgins was reporting on the San Diego State Aztecs victory during March Madness. As you’ll see in the video below a white SUV starts backing up and continues and continues and continues. It looks like it’s going to hit Higgins at a fairly substantial rate of speed. Finally, at the very last minute, Higgins’ cameraman stops the car.

Incredibly, Higgins seems unfazed and continues his report like nothing’s happened. He was uninjured in the incident. No word on what, if anything, happened to the driver of the SUV.

29 Percent of Americans Cannot Name Vice President

21 Mar

American Flag

According to Newsweek, who administered the U.S. Citizenship test to 1000 people, 29 percent of Americans cannot identify the Vice President of the United States (Joe Biden). Perhaps more shockingly, 38 percent of people failed the test outright. Here’s some other pretty important stuff that most Americans don’t know anything about.

  • 73 percent cannot name why we fought the Cold War
  • 44 percent cannot identify the Bill of Rights
  • 6 percent cannot correctly identify Independence Day on a map.

The article goes on to describe some pretty interesting information. Nearly 80 percent of Americans oppose any cuts to Medicare, Social Security or Medicaid though more than 70 percent want smaller government. Also, roughly 15 percent more Europeans can identify the Taliban than Americans.

Sad stuff, really.  Take the test yourself.
