Real Life Eerily Parallels Lax Bro Stereotype

18 Feb

Those of us who studied at colleges on the East Coast are probably familiar with the stereotype of the “Lax Bro.” Now, stereotypes are often based partially on the truth, but not this much. See if these facts sound familiar…

  • Daniel Brown is a banker out of Manhattan, who makes $120,000 a year at Sovereign Bank.
  • While searching his house, cops found cocaine in a safe.
  • They were in the house to search for evidence against Brown in a sexual assault case, brought forth by an ex-girlfriend.
  • During the alleged assault, Brown beat the woman with a lacrosse stick, yelling “you ruined my Thursday night!”
  • The complaint also says that Brown “punched her in bed, smashed her face into a mirror and rammed his fist down her throat to make her throw up.”
  • As part of his defense, Brown will use a secretly videotaped consensual sexual encounter with another woman where he used his lacrosse stick with her consent.
  • He played lacrosse at Ohio State University and had a domestic violence conviction from those days.

Sounds like every one of the horrible stereotypes confirmed, in one case.

Today’s Odds and Ends

15 Feb

Five short, but really interesting stories from the news today.

1) Mayor Bloomberg Drinks His Beer How?: New York City’s super-rich mayor visited the Brookyln Brewery yesterday. Nothing abnormal there. Another interesting photo op. Then, he was asked how he likes to drink his beer. His answer stunned the world (well, hard-core beer drinkers). “I actually put ice in my beer. Most people don’t,” the New York Post reported. Yes, Mr. Mayor, most people don’t. That’s an understatement.

"You drink your beer how, Mayor Bloomberg?"

2) Moving Video in Support of Gay Marriage: Following the moving speech of 19-year-old Zach Wahls before the Iowa House, 80-year-old Jean made the following video. It’s moving and you should watch it. Hers is the experience of so many other Americans.

3) Who Told You This Was a Good Idea?: Apparently, someone on the New Zealand police force did. I think, they were wrong. Dead wrong. The ad has been pulled, but not before the damage was done.

5) And Finally: Don’t underestimate the power of the alpaca.

HORROR: CBS News’ Lara Logan Sexually Assaulted in Egypt

15 Feb

CBS News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan is recovering in the United States today from a “a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating.” Logan was reporting from Tahrir Square on Friday, after ex-president Hosni Mubarak stepped down from government. At some point, she became separated from her crew and was surrounded by a mob of at least 200 people. A group of women and some Egyptian soliders rescued her from the assualt.

Before this recent attack, Logan and two CBS cameramen were detained in Egypt for a day. She returned to the United States, but flew back to Cairo shortly before Mubarak’s departure. Since joining CBS in 2002, Logan has covered events in locations ranging from Afghanistan to Iraq.

She is not the first reporter t0 come under attack in Egypt during the protests. CNN’s Anderson Cooper left the country following a beating, two FOX News reporters were also assaulted and a crowd swarmed CBS News’ Katie Couric during a report. In all, more than 140 reporters have been attacked during the protests and one Egyptian reporter died.

Emmy-Nominated Journalist Serene Branson Uninjured After Bizarre TV Meltdown

14 Feb

Serene Branson

Last night, Emmy-nominated TV journalist Serene Branson did a segment for a Los Angeles affiliate about the Grammy Awards to start the broadcast. What happened next is included in the video below. When I first saw it, I feared the worst. It sounds like she suffers a stroke on the air. The TV station, however, issued a statement today that paramedics examined her immediately after her report and determined she had not suffered any medical crisis. She is resting comfortably at home today. Still don’t know if I find this clip funny.

Most clips of the incident have been removed, but ABC News and the Today Show were quick to weigh in with experts speculating about what might have happened.

The Case Against Foodies

14 Feb

Writer B.R. Myers tackles the ongoing epidemic of foodies in a long piece published in this month’s edition of The Atlantic. His rant spares no one: people ranging from Michael Pollan to Anthony Bourdain are attacked in the article. Now, I actually agree with Myers in some of his points. Among the obnoxious things that foodies do:

1. Invent trends that people follow stupidly without thinking for themselves. Example: the recent spate of pie store openings and  the country’s desire for gourmet butchers.

2. Tell people that really expensive food is a “good bargain.” I agree, a $100 lunch cannot be considered a good bargain by anyone.

3. Creating “dining experiences,” appreciating the “journey” that food can take you on, etc.

4. Anthony Bourdain is annoying. But I don’t dislike his work because it’s about food. I dislike it because Bourdain’s personality is oafish and annoying. I would feel the same way if he wrote about interior decorating or sports.

Now, I draw the line with other points that he makes.

1. Not all foodies are created equal. Not everyone preaches. I don’t agree that Michael Pollan, for example, is overly preachy at all. Pollan’s mission is to change the way we think about the food we eat. He wants us to appreciate how the food we eat made it to our plates, and what costs that has associated with it. He wants us to eat better food, and has a health epidemic and obesity to support him.

2. Foodies don’t all rub organic food in the faces of the poor. A lot of people make it their mission to increase access to these foods to the poor. It’s true that low-income families often don’t have access to organic, healthy foods. That’s the problem. That’s what I’d like to see change. Americans need to prioritize food as an important expense, rather than looking for the cheapest products out there.

Obviously, I could go on and on. How about you read the article and let me know what you think?
