First Music Video Made By Skype

15 May

If you know the name Sara Bareilles, it’s probably because of her two most famous songs— “Love Song” and “King of Anything.” Well, her latest is called “Uncharted” and it features an unusual cast of characters performing in it. Among the musicians who make appearances: Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael of Maroon 5Josh Groban,Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D.Jennifer Nettles of SugarlandBen FoldsRyan Tedder of OneRepublicLaura JansenIngrid Michaelson,Vanessa CarltonTegan and SaraCary BrothersGreg LaswellAdam Gardner and Ryan Miller from Guster, and Keenan Cahill. They all mouth the words to her song and happily bop about. And they all seem to do it in front of their computers, without any sort of professional camera equipment.

Who knows how Bareilles met all of these cool and (extremely) diverse people? On her official site, she explains some of the thinking behind the song:

“This is about being a fan of people who take chances, who are fearless, who have integrity, and go off into the world saying yes to what’s around them. It’s filled with some of the people in my life who do that everyday. They have impacted my world and are not only incredible artists, but great friends as well. They all worked this giant favor into their very busy lives and helped me out more than I can say”

Basically, this is an amazing idea.

Dan Adler: Weirdest Congressional Candidate Ever?

14 May

Dan Adler for Congress

The 36th district of California needs a new representative in Congress. Long-time representative Jane Harman retired from Congress about two months ago to accept a new position at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Well, that set up a special election to fill her seat which is probably one of the weirdest races I’ve ever seen.

First, under a new California law, all candidates will participate in the primary on May 17th. The top 2 finishers, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election. Most experts believe a Democrat will represent the district so the primary will likely determine which two Democrats the people of the 36th will have to choose between.

Enter Dan Adler. He comes from a non-political background, but has been active in many area non-profits. He also worked as a senior executive at Disney. So far, so normal. His father survived Auschwitz and his campaign manager is Sean Astin (you know, “Mr. Frodo,” from Lord of the Rings). Even that is normal compared to these campaign ads though.

So, this ad, named “Stick Together,” has gained international attention. It’s vaguely racist and just weird, which obviously draws everyone to it and made it go viral. Pretty slick marketing, if that was by design. The ad begins with an Asian man saying that Asian people are 15 percent of the population in the distict. Jump to a laundromat and a Korean woman with a heavy accent. Adler says many people in the district have issues, at which point the woman randomly jumps in and says “I’m Korean” for no conceivable reason. Adler then has the most awkward laugh ever to emerge from a politician’s mouth.  The woman than says, “You’re Jewish. We minorities must stick together.” Then, the ad closes with a crowd people saying “send a mensch to Congress.” Weird.

Another weird ad comes from actress Patty Duke. She appears on the legendary muscle beach to let everyone know that Adler “gets shit done.” Man in bikinis, what else could you want? Adler looks really weird flexing his muscles in a suit and helping Duke lift the weights. (Other celebrity fans include Macy Gray.)

Then, there’s this ad with Adler’s son. He plays basketball and proudly proclaims that his dad “gets shit done.” Nice slogan, young man.

Italian Bus Driver Uses Two Cell Phones While Driving

13 May

This does not surprise me at all. An Italian bus driver was caught on video using not one, but two, cellphones as he took passengers to Rome’s Ciampino airport. The video shows him speaking on the phone, while trying to work his e-mail on another at the same time. He uses his elbows to steer the bus, while driving at what appears to be a high rate of speed.

At least in theory, driving with a cellphone is against the law in Italy. In my personal experience, drivers do it all the time and the law is rarely enforced. The Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, posted the clip of the driver to their website. A regional transport commissioner said on May 12 that the driver has been suspended, pending the results of further investigation.

Mother Injects 8-Year-Old Daughter With Botox

13 May

We officially have a new nominee for the World’s Worst Mother. Kerry Campbell and her daughter, Britney, often compete in beauty pageants and have been looking an extra edge that will give Britney the chance to win.

They found their solution: Botox and leg waxing. Kerry is a part-time aesthetician who has used Botox on her own face. She says her daughter complained about wrinkles on her face and asked about having Botox. Kerry then administered the drug to her daughter’s face through five injections at three separate sites.

“We were getting into the pageants,” Kerry told ABC News. “I knew she was complaining about her face, having wrinkles, and things like that. When I brought it up to Britney she was all for it.”

Doctors say there are relatively few risks to Botox, but any risk is too much for a young girl who does not have any skin problems. They fear that beyond the physical damage there is a risk of psychological damage.

Now, Child Protective Services (CPS) in San Francisco have launched an investigation into the mother’s behavior. Pretty silly to talk about these things on national TV.

Singer Covers Rebecca Black’s Friday in Chinese

12 May

YouTube user dawen decided that 1 billion people needed to hear Rebecca Black’s monstrosity in their native language: Chinese. So, he recorded his version of it. It sounds just as ridiculous as the original and I don’t even speak Chinese.

Oh, PS, Glee also covered “Friday” in their most recent episode.

Rebecca Black must be laughing all the way to the bank. 136 million views and counting for the original song on YouTube.
