Anthony Weiner Admits to Sending Lewd Tweet

6 Jun

New York Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner held what MSNBC’s Luke Russert called “an extraordinary” press conference this afternoon, admitting he sent lewd, inappropriate images to a series of women over a series of years. Following days of news coverage, Weiner admitted that a tweet showing a cloth-covered erect penis was sent by him. Over the course of the press conference, Weiner apologized numerous times for his behavior, calling it “dumb,” “inappropriate,” “stupid,” among other terms.

Among the facts we learned:

  • Weiner meant to send the tweet that started the press coverage as a direct message on Twitter. For those of you not familiar with how twitter works, think of a direct message as a short, private email communication visible only to the two parties involved. A tweet, like Weiner sent, is visible to anyone who follows the account or searches for it. Once he realized his mistake, Weiner “panicked” and lied in order to prevent further personal embarrassment.
  • The series of relationships with women dates back at least three years. Many of the inappropriate relationships occurred before Weiner was married, but some of them occurred after he married long-time Hilary Clinton aide Huma Abedin last year.
  • Weiner never met any of the women and never engaged in sex outside of his marriage. The congressman met most of the women via Facebook and spoke with several of them by phone. He refused to answer whether he engaged in phone sex with any of them.
  • Before beginning the press conference, Weiner spoke with Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi. She urged him to tell the truth and expressed her disappointment in his behavior. Pelosi later opened an ethics investigation into Weiner’s behavior.
  • Weiner issued a blanket apology to everyone affected by his bad judgement. The apology included right-wing commentator Andrew Breitbart who broke the scandal and shockingly took to the podium before Weiner spoke.
  • The congressman denies using governmental resources to have the discussions, saying they occurred at home and own personal devices. He does not plan to resign.

Lady Gaga Promotion Cost Amazon $3 Million

6 Jun

In case you missed it, Amazon opted last week to offer Lady Gaga‘s brand new album “Born This Way” as a digital download for $.99. What a deal (I did it!). More than 440,000 people downloaded the album at its special price, but Amazon still paid $8 to $9 each for the album.

After doing the math, Amazon seems to have lost $3 million on the deal. Horrible, right? Well, maybe not. The promotion certainly gave them lots of free press and introduced more people to their cloud-based music player. If you chalk the whole things up to promotion fees, then it actually seems like a pretty savvy move.

Gaga did well from it as well. Figures show that she sold 1.1 million copies of her album last week. That’s an impressive total and one that few artists have ever hit. Still, it’s really misleading. Many of those 440,000 people (like me, for instance) would never have bought her album for full price, but opted to do so because of the Amazon promotion. Her sales figures are quite inflated because of that deal.

Basically, it looks like a great move from the perspective of Gaga and Amazon. Anyone disagree?

Errors in Sarah Palin’s Description of Paul Revere

5 Jun

Famed half-term governor of Alaska Sarah Palin was in Boston earlier this week and decided to offer everyone a history lesson on Paul Revere. Here’s a transcript of her comments.

He who warned, uh, the … the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringin’ those bells and, um, by makin’ sure that as he’s ridin’ his horse through town to send those warnin’ shots and bells that, uh, we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free … and we were gonna be armed.

Among the problems with her account:

  1. We were all British then: There was no difference between the people Revere warned and the British troops, at least in the way Palin described it. We were all British and considered under the reign of the King of England.
  2. There were no second amendment rights: Palin seems to suggest that the troops wanted to take away some right of the Americans to bear arms. Well, there were no protections like that.
  3. Revere fired no shots during his ride: The point of his midnight ride (which he did with around 40 other people, by the way) was to move silently through the area because there were so many British soliders around. He certainly didn’t fire any guns and also never shouted, “The British are coming! The British are coming!” as has been popularly reported.,
  4. Lanterns, not bells, were how the message was communicated: Remember, the point of the ride was not to raise the alarm. Silence was key. Lanterns were the method of choice to communicate. Much quieter than trees.
Those are just the most obvious problems with Palin’s statement. She has gone on to say, “I didn’t mess up” with her account of the ride. Normally, I agree that talking about this woman is losing precious seconds of our lives that we can’t get back, but this error is so egregious it needs to be corrected.
God, she is stupid. Who would ever vote for her?

Teacher Protects Students As Drug Gun Battle Rages Outside

1 Jun

A teacher in Mexico calmly talks to her students as a fierce drug rages just meters outside her classroom. Five men died in the violence, but none of the children were injured. The battle began at  a taxi stand outside the classroom, which doubled as a location for drug smuggling.

This teacher is enormously brave.

Sean Symons Shows Danger of Texting And Driving

31 May

YouTube user Sean Symons spotted this driver texting while driving and maneuvering the car quite erratically. He called the police, but decided to follow the car at a safe distance and document the unsafe driving that was taking place. Watch what happens next. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries.

Do not text and drive! If you need any more proof, I recommend revisiting this mini documentary.
