Late Clarence Clemons Appears On Lady Gaga’s Latest Video

19 Jun

He was the Big Man in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and the only member of it to share an album with the Boss. Clarence Clemons, who died yesterday at age 69 from complications after a stroke, left a large mark on the music world.

He continued to innovate up until his death. Most recently he provided saxophone solos for Lady Gaga‘s current album. His solo work is featured prominently in the song “Edge of Glory” and in its music video, which came out late last week. Unlike most of her other songs, Gaga appears alone in the music video except for Clemons (likely a testament to his importance on the track).

Bruce Springsteen said of his friend’s death: “Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner, and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band.”

Clemons’ extended his talents across a number of genres in the music world and worked with artists like Jackson Browne , Aretha Franklin, Gary U.S. Bonds, Jim Carroll and Twisted Sister. Touchingly, a number of Lady Gaga fans sent a “get well” message to the saxophonist last week. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Clarence Clemons will be missed.

Lady Gaga Promotion Cost Amazon $3 Million

6 Jun

In case you missed it, Amazon opted last week to offer Lady Gaga‘s brand new album “Born This Way” as a digital download for $.99. What a deal (I did it!). More than 440,000 people downloaded the album at its special price, but Amazon still paid $8 to $9 each for the album.

After doing the math, Amazon seems to have lost $3 million on the deal. Horrible, right? Well, maybe not. The promotion certainly gave them lots of free press and introduced more people to their cloud-based music player. If you chalk the whole things up to promotion fees, then it actually seems like a pretty savvy move.

Gaga did well from it as well. Figures show that she sold 1.1 million copies of her album last week. That’s an impressive total and one that few artists have ever hit. Still, it’s really misleading. Many of those 440,000 people (like me, for instance) would never have bought her album for full price, but opted to do so because of the Amazon promotion. Her sales figures are quite inflated because of that deal.

Basically, it looks like a great move from the perspective of Gaga and Amazon. Anyone disagree?

Hilarious Weird Al’s “Perform This Way”

20 Apr

So, Lady Gaga did not approve of a song by Weird Al. It’s called “Perform This Way” and is a pretty pointed satire of the Queen of Pop’s “Born This Way.” Its proceeds would have benefited the Human Rights Campaign. Well, citing “Fair Use,” Weird Al decided to release it anyway to YouTube and Gaga’s people later relented. They gave official permission for the song to go forward. Take a listen, it’s pretty good.

Viral Videos You Should Watch

17 Mar

These are some of the best videos I’ve seen over the past day

1) Jimmy Wong (Response to Alexandra Wallace): This Middlebury alum performs a mocking video of Alexandra Wallace. Really catchy. Well done Jimmy.

2) “Bless You” (Remake of “Fuck You” by Cee Lo Green): Because everyone asked for a Christian version of the explicit “Fuck You,” these guys delievered.

3) Stupid Internet: Now this poor boy never knew that 15 years after he sang (and danced) his little heart out to Mariah Carey’s “Emotions,” YouTube would be invented and his life would be ruined.

4) Steve Kardynal (“Born ThiS Way”): Apparently, this guy is famous. He sure freaked out most of NYC by singing Lady Gaga’s latest hit in drag. Was it not cold when he filmed it?

5) Wesleyan Students (“I Have Sex”): If you haven’t heard, the Republicans in the House want to cut all funding for Planned Parenthood. The students at Wesleyan don’t think that’s a good idea and this video shows how many of them have used that organization’s resources.
