Emmy-Nominated Journalist Serene Branson Uninjured After Bizarre TV Meltdown

14 Feb

Serene Branson

Last night, Emmy-nominated TV journalist Serene Branson did a segment for a Los Angeles affiliate about the Grammy Awards to start the broadcast. What happened next is included in the video below. When I first saw it, I feared the worst. It sounds like she suffers a stroke on the air. The TV station, however, issued a statement today that paramedics examined her immediately after her report and determined she had not suffered any medical crisis. She is resting comfortably at home today. Still don’t know if I find this clip funny.

Most clips of the incident have been removed, but ABC News and the Today Show were quick to weigh in with experts speculating about what might have happened.

The Case Against Foodies

14 Feb

Writer B.R. Myers tackles the ongoing epidemic of foodies in a long piece published in this month’s edition of The Atlantic. His rant spares no one: people ranging from Michael Pollan to Anthony Bourdain are attacked in the article. Now, I actually agree with Myers in some of his points. Among the obnoxious things that foodies do:

1. Invent trends that people follow stupidly without thinking for themselves. Example: the recent spate of pie store openings and  the country’s desire for gourmet butchers.

2. Tell people that really expensive food is a “good bargain.” I agree, a $100 lunch cannot be considered a good bargain by anyone.

3. Creating “dining experiences,” appreciating the “journey” that food can take you on, etc.

4. Anthony Bourdain is annoying. But I don’t dislike his work because it’s about food. I dislike it because Bourdain’s personality is oafish and annoying. I would feel the same way if he wrote about interior decorating or sports.

Now, I draw the line with other points that he makes.

1. Not all foodies are created equal. Not everyone preaches. I don’t agree that Michael Pollan, for example, is overly preachy at all. Pollan’s mission is to change the way we think about the food we eat. He wants us to appreciate how the food we eat made it to our plates, and what costs that has associated with it. He wants us to eat better food, and has a health epidemic and obesity to support him.

2. Foodies don’t all rub organic food in the faces of the poor. A lot of people make it their mission to increase access to these foods to the poor. It’s true that low-income families often don’t have access to organic, healthy foods. That’s the problem. That’s what I’d like to see change. Americans need to prioritize food as an important expense, rather than looking for the cheapest products out there.

Obviously, I could go on and on. How about you read the article and let me know what you think?

New Jobs

13 Feb

That’s right. I’m on to new adventures, splitting my time between two new internships.

1) Foodista.com: Check it out. This awesome website is attempting to become the “wikipedia” of food. I’m working as a blogger for them, utilizing my love of food news and the food movement to craft blog posts on a daily basis. Check out my foodista profile here. And check up on the status of my blog posts as often as you can stand.

2) Seattle Business Magazine: I’m now an editorial assistant at the Seattle Business Magazine. It’s a small, local magazine that comes out monthly. It focuses on business issues (obviously). My primary responsibilities include fact-checking, researching for other stories, blog posts and writing my own stories (first story pitches are due next week).

Should be lots of fun! I’m excited.

Rat On A Plane! Animal Delays Flight

13 Feb

As an Alaskan Airline flight, bound for Spokane, WA, was about to take off when the passengers spotted it. A rat, scurrying around the cabin. The plane immediately returned to the gates at SeaTac and passengers boarded another plane an hour later. An airport spokesman called the incident “a very rare occurrence.” Alaska Airlines called in a professional exterminator to make sure the plane was rodent-free and to ensure that it had not gnawed through the plane’s wiring.

In the much-hyped $850 million match versus Manchester City, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney does this. His team won the game 2-1.
