Hank Williams Jr. Suspended Over Controversial Obama Comments

3 Oct

Perhaps because he’s considering a Senate run from Tennessee in 2012, Hank Williams Jr. appeared on “Fox and Friends” Monday morning and promptly talked those Senate hopes away.

Williams came out swinging, claiming he disliked all of the Republican contenders in the presidential race and calling the much-hyped “golf summit” between President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner “one of the greatest political mistakes ever.” He also called Obama and Vice President Joe Biden “the enemies.”

Then, he went even further off the deep end. “That would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu. Not hardly. In the shape this country is in?” The whole appearance was bizarre and Williams seemed off.

ESPN reacted quickly to Williams’ comments by pulling his opening sketch from tonight’s Monday Night Football game. According to a statement by the network,

While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football.  We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.

After the scale of his damaging comments became clear, Williams issued his own statement.

“Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme – but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me – how ludicrous that pairing was.  They’re polar opposites and it made no sense.  They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President.”

“Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists – but there’s never a backlash – no  outrage to those comparisons…  Working class people are hurting – and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job – it makes a whole lot of us angry.  Something has to change. The policies have to change.”

Often times when people say the Tea Party is racist, it’s because they say racist things. Comparing Obama and Hitler has no legitimacy at all and doesn’t serve any purpose in our political discourse.  See Hank Williams Jr.’s comments below:

Amanda Knox Acquitted of Meredith Kercher Murder

3 Oct

Update 4: Apparently, Knox’s passport is OK and she will depart for Seattle on Tuesday morning. She has been released from prison and will spend the night with family in the Rome area. Must be a really strange time for her.

Update 3: The Telegraph reports that Knox’s American passport expired while she was in prison. Will she still be allowed to fly home immediately?

Update 2: Check out some of the local reactions from Seattle here.

Update: Unlike the 2009 trial, no airplane ticket home was pre-purchased for Knox. Rumors the family had scheduled a private jet to be available to take her away are also apparently untrue. It’s unclear how the family plans to leave the country, but the State Department will likely help.

A group of six jurors and two judges acquitted American college student Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito of the murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher in 2007.

Knox will go back to the prison, undergo processing but will then be released immediately. Her parents plan to put her in a car and head to an airport. Her lawyer said the family plans to get her out of the country “as soon as possible.”

“We’re thankful Amanda’s nightmare is over,” Deanna Knox, Amanda’s sister, said. “We’re thankful for the support we have received from all over the world.”

The panel deliberated for more than 11 hours before returning their verdict at 9:45 p.m. tonight in the small Italian city of Perugia. Media from around the world gathered for the verdict, with reports of more than 400 organizations gathered outside the courtroom.

Both Knox and Sollecito had their convictions of slander upheld, but they were given credit for time served.

Michelle Obama Shops at Target

Michelle Obama Target

Michelle Obama still gets to do something ordinary on occasion, even in her role as First Lady of the United States. That apparently includes popping over to Target in suburban DC to do some shopping.

Obama stopped in Alexandria, Virginia to shop (though honestly what she could have bought is beyond me). She pushed her own cart and was only recognized by the person checking her out.

“It was so quick,” Maria Panagopulos, store manager, said. “We only realized it was her at the end of her visit. She was incognito. The team was really excited. We hadn’t had an Obama family member since the beginning of his term as far as we are aware.”
