Videos and Pictures of Alabama Tornadoes

28 Apr

At least 250 people have died in 6 southern states as a string of vicious tornadoes leveled property and left a swath of destruction in their path. Alabama was the hardest hit of the states with at least 162 confirmed fatalities. Governor Robert Bentley said, “We had a major catastrophic event.”  Tornadoes also caused fatalities in Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Kentucky. Each of the states affected has declared a state of emergency.

The tornadoes moved in rapidly and devastated urban areas like Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Residents had little time to flee or prepare for the storms. The National Weather Service said it received reports of 137 tornadoes from the storm. An estimated 1 million people are without power and several hundred people were injured in the storm. A nuclear power plant was shut down in the aftermath of the storm.

Residents produced some absolutely incredible and terrifying videos of the disaster. In this clip, an obviously terrified videographer records as the tornado tears up trees in a nearby parking lot.

Entire neighborhoods were destroyed by the tornadoes.

Here’s video from storm chasers of four different tornadoes that touched down during the storms.

You can see how terrified the newscasters are as they report the storm live. The weatherman is clearly in shock and trying to keep it together.

This photo just captures the sheer size of one of the storms.

In this footage (posted by the AP), you get a real sense of just how wide these storms were.

Look at the sheer size of the storm as it approaches. Also, note that it is right downtown, in a highly populated area.

This video was shot from inside a car during the storms. You can see just how large the storm is and watch as it jumps across the highway.

I have no idea why anyone would be outside when they can see this so close to them.

This photo is perhaps most shocking of them all. The tornado is just tearing about an urban area.

Will update as new images/ videos become available.

Barack Obama Releases Birth Certificate

27 Apr

Worried that an increasing amount of press coverage of the “birther” movement was crowding out the debate on other important issues, President Barack Obama released a long-form certificate of birth this morning. The document clearly shows that the President was born in a Hawaiian hospital on August 4, 1961.

The White House released the document early this morning, per the President’s order. He arrived at 9:45 a.m. for a statement where he criticized members of the press for their silliness.

On Friday, the President wrote to Loretta J. Fuddy, the director of health at the State of Hawaii, requesting two copies of his original certificate of live birth. She complied. The President’s counsel took a trip to Hawaii, paid for out of the President’s personal account, to retrive the copies and they were released shortly thereafter.

“I know that there is going to be a segment of people for which no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest,” Obama said. “But I am speaking for the vast majority of the American people as well as for the press. We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We have better stuff to do. I have got better stuff to do. We have got big problems to solve.”

Real estate mogul and potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has been largely responsible for the issue returning to the public conscience in recent weeks, applauded the decision and took personal credit for it.

“Today I’m very proud of myself, because I’ve accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish,” said Trump on the release of the president’s birth certificate, according to NBC News. “I want to look at it, but I hope it’s true. … But he should have done it a long time ago.”

Marissa Mike Makes Hilarious News Blooper Reel

25 Apr

Local news affiliate KPSP covers news in the Coachella Valley and the Southern California. Well, recently they sent out veteran reporter Marissa Mike to cover the news of strong winds that knocked down a traffic light in Desert Hot Springs (or maybe Palm Springs since she changes throughout the outtakes).  Whatever knocked down that traffic light stuck around. You have to admire Mike’s devotion to wearing a baseball cap, since she appears to do so throughout her reporting (in spite of the problems she keeps running into). I want to see what the finished version of the story looked like.

Nice dedication!

Unbelievable Videos of Recent Tornadoes

25 Apr

Locations throughout the United States have seen an incredible number of destructive tornadoes over the last couple of weeks. First, we have the world’s calmest man. He sits in his car and waits as the tornado comes barreling toward him. I’m not really sure why he doesn’t drive away really fast, but he just sits talking calmly. At one point he yells, “hang on, I love you.” Thankfully, he seems to be OK at the end of the day. Some would call him a bad ass, but I prefer “really lucky stupid guy.”

Then, last week a tornado came down suddenly at the St. Louis airport. Somewhat inexplicably and miraculously since the airport was full of people, there were no serious injuries or deaths. Security cameras captured the scene inside one of the terminals.

It was a historic tornado for the city, and left more than 750 homes either destroyed or severely damaged. Incredibly, the airport was up and running at around 70 percent just days after the tornado. More than 50 percent of windows were blown out in Concourse C and airport officials believe it will takes “months” before the airport returns to normal. St. Louis has the nation’s 30th busiest airport with over 12 million people passing through it annually. What makes the airport’s recovery more impressive is the damage visible in this video, shot during and immediately following the tornado.

Valeriy Tolmachev Attempts Hijacking On Paris-Rome Flight; Demands To Go To Libya

24 Apr

Alitalia

A man attempted to hijack an Alitalia flight from Paris-Rome Sunday night, but was overpowered by other flight attendants.  The 48-year-old man, from Kazakhstan originally and later identified as Valeriy Tolmachev from UNESCO, was in a “disturbed” state when he arose and assaulted a flight attendent with what appeared to be a pair of toenail clippers, according to the Corriere Della Sera (article is in Italian). He held the small knife to her throat for several minutes before he was overpowered.

He demanded that the plane be directed towards the Libyan capital of Tripoli. Thankfully, the other flight attendants and several passengers responded quickly and immobilized the man. A doctor on board the plane administered a sedative. The plane landed around 8:00 p.m. local time at the Rome’s airport.

The flight attendant was treated for minor injuries, but there were no other injuries. Tolmachev was arrested by police on the ground and taken away for questioning.
