Inside the Shady Chinese Organ Market

16 May

Al Jazeera takes a look at the shady, unknown black market of organs in China. The country estimates that 1.5 million people need organ transplants but just 10,000 receive them annually. As a result, desperate people in need of money help make up the difference.

A couple of clicks on the Internet bring you to sites offering human organs at reasonable prices.  The story follows one migrant farm worker who offers to sell her kidney for around $50,000. If she decides to follow through, she will travel to Xuzhou city in Jiangsu province where someone will meet her upon arrival. If a physical finds her to be in good health, the dealer will find a suitable match and promises to transfer $50,000 to her bank account before the operation.

Unfortunately, the operators of these black market businesses are hardly reputable and will often only pay $15,000 once the operation is complete.

This is an important story, so thanks to Al Jazeera for publishing it.

First Music Video Made By Skype

15 May

If you know the name Sara Bareilles, it’s probably because of her two most famous songs— “Love Song” and “King of Anything.” Well, her latest is called “Uncharted” and it features an unusual cast of characters performing in it. Among the musicians who make appearances: Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael of Maroon 5Josh Groban,Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D.Jennifer Nettles of SugarlandBen FoldsRyan Tedder of OneRepublicLaura JansenIngrid Michaelson,Vanessa CarltonTegan and SaraCary BrothersGreg LaswellAdam Gardner and Ryan Miller from Guster, and Keenan Cahill. They all mouth the words to her song and happily bop about. And they all seem to do it in front of their computers, without any sort of professional camera equipment.

Who knows how Bareilles met all of these cool and (extremely) diverse people? On her official site, she explains some of the thinking behind the song:

“This is about being a fan of people who take chances, who are fearless, who have integrity, and go off into the world saying yes to what’s around them. It’s filled with some of the people in my life who do that everyday. They have impacted my world and are not only incredible artists, but great friends as well. They all worked this giant favor into their very busy lives and helped me out more than I can say”

Basically, this is an amazing idea.

Italian Bus Driver Uses Two Cell Phones While Driving

13 May

This does not surprise me at all. An Italian bus driver was caught on video using not one, but two, cellphones as he took passengers to Rome’s Ciampino airport. The video shows him speaking on the phone, while trying to work his e-mail on another at the same time. He uses his elbows to steer the bus, while driving at what appears to be a high rate of speed.

At least in theory, driving with a cellphone is against the law in Italy. In my personal experience, drivers do it all the time and the law is rarely enforced. The Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, posted the clip of the driver to their website. A regional transport commissioner said on May 12 that the driver has been suspended, pending the results of further investigation.

Singer Covers Rebecca Black’s Friday in Chinese

12 May

YouTube user dawen decided that 1 billion people needed to hear Rebecca Black’s monstrosity in their native language: Chinese. So, he recorded his version of it. It sounds just as ridiculous as the original and I don’t even speak Chinese.

Oh, PS, Glee also covered “Friday” in their most recent episode.

Rebecca Black must be laughing all the way to the bank. 136 million views and counting for the original song on YouTube.

Kenton Cool Tweets From Mount Everest Summit

8 May

British mountain climber Kenton Cool became the first person to ever tweet from the top of Mount Everest on May 5. Cool (pretty epic mountaineering name, no?) used a Samsung Galaxy S II to make the first 3G call and send a quick tweet from the summit.

His message read: “Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!” The feat was possible thanks to a Ncell, a Nepali mobile network operator, which installed the first cell tower last November at Everest Base Camp.

Samsung sponsored Cool as part of a marketing campaign. He also spoke with the BBC from the summit saying, “The world is getting smaller and smaller. We got a 3G signal on the summit of Everest. How incredible is that?”

Here’s video of Cool phoning his wife, Jazz, from the summit. She obviously is terrified about why she’s receiving the call.
