Venezuela Suspends Driver’s License For First Time Ever

20 May

Following the rules of the road has always seemed to be a suggestion, not mandatory, in most of Latin America. Well, never has that been made clearer than today.

For the first time in the history of Venezuela someone’s driver’s license has been suspended. That’s right, it has never happened before.┬áRamon Parra, 41, is a bus driver there and has become the first person to lose his license for 12 months.

What was Parra doing? Well, according to news reports, he was “driving at excessive speed in a large, overladen passenger bus that was missing one of its rear wheels.┬áThe bus was packed with more passengers than legally permitted and one of its six wheels was wedged in an aisle inside.”

A law allowing authorities to suspend a license was first passed in 2008. The maximum possible suspension is 5 years. Why would you get that? For killing someone.
