Graphic Video of Yueyue Accident in Foshan, China

18 Oct

Warning: the video above is extremely graphic and difficult to watch. Millions of Chinese people are debating the country’s moral customs following a horrifying accident that left a two-year-old toddler gravely injured and likely brain-dead.

Surveilance video paints an unmistakable picture of what happened. The two-year-old, named Yueyue, was absent-mindly wandering outside her family’s hardware store on a narrow street in a busy market. Out of nowhere, a van driver runs over the girl. The driver pauses for a second, as the girl lies trapped between the front and rear wheels of his vehicle, before he continues driving and runs her over again.

When reached by local media later, the man said he had just broken up with his girlfriend and was talking on the phone during the accident. “If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan,” he said.

Perhaps even more appalling is what happens next. Several people, some of whom have to have witnessed the accident, walk right by the fallen girl as she writhes on the ground. One man walks by without even looking at the girl. A cyclist makes a brief glance but continues on his way. In all, 18 people walk past the girl over an eight minute period before a 58-year-old trash collector named Chen Xianmei comes to her aid (there must be a parable in there).

After searching for someone to help, the trash collector located the girl’s mother who rushed her away to hospital. She continues to live but will remain in a vegetative state.

Dan Wheldon

Two-time Indianpolis 500 winner and popular race car driver Dan Wheldon died following a horrible multi-car crash during the 11th lap of the IndyCar Series season finale, the Las Vegas Indy 300.

At least 15 cars were involved in the crash. Wheldon’s car spun out of control and struck a wall. Three other drivers also sustained injuries.

“IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.”

Wheldon won the Indianpolis 500 twice, in 2005 and 2011. He had been expected to take the place of Danica Patrick next season, who is moving to NASCAR in 2012, in the Go-Daddy-sponsored car for Andretti Autosport. Wheldon was making just his third start of the IndyCar series.

“I’ll tell you, I’ve never seen anything like it,” driver Ryan Briscoe said. “The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something.”

Farmer Ian Neale Discusses Vegetation With Snoop Dogg

14 Oct

Welsh farmer Ian Neale grows really big vegetables. He recently grew the world’s largest “swede” or rutabaga, which caught the eye of famous rapper Snoop Dogg. The rapper sent out an invitation to Neale via YouTube.

What followed in the aftermath has to be one of the most awkward interviews in the history of the BBC. First, the reporter goes “respect!” after showing Snoop’s invitation, then they actually talk to Neale. He goes on to say that Snoop’s music isn’t his “scene” so he turned the free tickets down, but ultimately did meet the man and smoked some fine “not tobacco.” He also said he had never smoked any “not tobacco” before.

Snoop’s just looking for gardening tips. Respect?
