Break Clavicles (and small people)

17 Aug

At the beginning of the homestay, we had agreed to 3 events where the kids would be together, but I pushed our local rep to arrange a 4th because the kids pushed me to do so.  We did it.

The result was a soccer game between the Americans and the Italian host siblings.   We rented a field for an hour and got all the families to bring their kids.  The result was wonderful.  When the idea was being thrown around, some of the Americans told me that they wouldn’t play (I told them it was fine to watch), but when the actual game happened they caved in and joined their friends.

My kids during the game

Before we began, I told the Italian hosts to go easy on the kids.  They did and were incredibly good sports about the whole thing.  Still, the Americans did pretty well and even mounted some attacks.  The second half yielded some really good opportunities and I remember vividly Rob’s score from inside the box.  You would have thought we won the World Cup with the shot! And that was the last goal, so I guess we won!  America! A really memorable moment happened at half time.  The kids wanted to come together and do a chant before the second half.  The result is this.

We got together after the game (again with almost all the families and Americans) and walked around downtown during the night.  We happened on a concert in the downtown area.  As we’re walking up to it, a slightly scary/funny moment happened.  I notice that a midget is passing and let him by us, but Lowell does not notice.  He yells, “Oh sh**” as the guy passes.  Our short friend was pissed (even if Lowell was just startled) and chased the group for a while. Anyways, it was great and yielded some really cool group pictures.  Some of those are below.

Love Today

16 Aug

Sorry for so many posts today, but I just saw this video and wanted to make sure everyone else saw it.  Times are tough. The economy stinks.  But…. we have each other, and love is something that keeps us together and strong.  This video shows military families being surprised as their loved ones come back from combat overseas.  I cried a lot.

The video makes me think back to this one, that came out against Prop 8.  Also, really well done and made me cry.

Love will keep us together.

Odds and Ends

As I stepped into work today, I had a horrific feeling of déjà vu when I saw that a plane had crashed on a Colombian island in the Caribbean.  Incredibly, out of more than 130 passengers on the plane, only one person died— a “miracle,” according to one local government official.  The New York Times has an excellent account of the crash, which caused the plane to split into three pieces.

The "miracle" crash

But the crash struck me because it occurred on a Monday.  Last week, of course, a plane carrying former senator Ted Stevens crashed into the Alaskan wilderness, resulting in the deaths of five people. Investigators have been able to speak with survivors who felt nothing out of the ordinary before the crash.

Anyways, let’s hope this disturbing trend has come to an end.  Another news story that I heard a lot about given my proximity to it is the D.C. mayoral race, which pits incumbent Adrian Fenty against Vincent Gray, both democrats.  An unofficial theme song in favor of Fenty has emerged, and makes me laugh every time I hear it.

A last note.  I finally made it to “We, the Pizza” with my buddy Ezra this weekend.  The restaurant was packed and blaring lots of bad 2000s pop.   We opted for a full-size Buffalo mozzarella and roasted tomato pizza, which was delicious.  The crust is plenty thick; we had enough pizza leftover for another meal pretty much.  Check out the menu here.  Well worth checking out.  It’s trendy after all.

Lost!

One afternoon, with a little more than a week left in the homestay, I get dropped off in the center of Cosenza with a few hours to wander the streets by myself.  My quasi-homestay mom, Maria, has to work.

I’m dropped off on the main shopping street of the town, Corso Mazzini.  There are a random collection of all sorts of stores—Zara, H&M, Gucci, etc.

Corso Mazzini in Cosenza

So I’m walking down the road with the idea of getting to old Cosenza (Cosenza vecchia, for all you Italian speakers). There is an awesome gelateria, called Gelateria Zorro down there.  It gets its name from an old mafioso (member of the mafia) that was gunned down there in the 1960s.  The area is also very old and beautiful, and I’d never had the chance to explore it alone.

So I’m walking down the road.  First, I pass Piazza Kennedy, where the large group of us would meet to explore downtown during the homestay.

I keep walking down the road.  A bit further down, there is another piazza that has a local courthouse in it, I believe. I’m walking past it when suddenly I hear “Mama Goose!”  I look up and find Travis, Bajia, Rob and Sam, along with their various host siblings sitting down and chilling out.  I decide I’ll stop and chat with them for a bit.  Sam and his host brother leave quickly.

The rest of us hang out for a while.  The Americans express the need to find a bathroom, and I say that I have to go buy something to drink.  Thanks to Antonio (Rob’s host brother) I go to a supermarket and find something, telling everyone I’ll be back in a bit.

I return, having bought some yummy chocolate for everyone.  And…. everyone’s gone. I was gone maybe 10 minutes. No sign of anyone.  Then, I run into the Italian host siblings.  The Americans “are in the bathroom” they tell me.  I figure I’ll just wait and say goodbye.  10, 15 minutes pass.  Then 20, 25.  By this point, one of the host fathers shows up, wondering where the Americans are.  He has to drive the family back out to the ocean and then return for a flight to Brazil later that night.  He’s already pushed for time.

So… I get panicky.  I run up and down the street trying to find Bajia, Travis and Rob.  We call Rob.  He informs us that Bajia and Travis have gone off in search of a bathroom, but he has returned to his family’s apartment in the city (whish is close).  He gives the impression that Bajia and Travis have returned to Travis’ home, which is halfway across the city.  They’d have to take the bus!

40 minutes later and still no sign of them!  I get really freaked out.  I’m thinking of finding a policeman and, unfortunately this would be the best way to describe them in Italy, ask him to put out an APB for two African American Americans in Cosenza.  They would make quite the novelty walking around together.

The other Italians around me start planning. Two of them (the two that want to become a couple) would take a bus home and find them.  Just as the situation starts to get crazy, they come running!  Travis and Bajia.  The day is saved and they are safe.  They just couldn’t find a bathroom all that time.

The lesson:  when in Italy, always use the bathroom when you buy something.  Public bathrooms are very hard to find. Crisis averted.  Lost children found.  Unfortunately, this is a theme we’d have to revisit later in the trip… But more on that later.

Music is… my hot, hot sex

15 Aug

Anyone remember this song from the Brazilian group CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy), which means tired of being sexy?

So a rough outline of my day in the homestay.  I’d wake up by 8:30 and get breakfast.  Then, in typical Calabrian fashion, no one would leave the house until 5 in the afternoon. To be fair, it was 40 degrees Celsius and it was really hot.  But still, the days got going very slowly.   The advantage of this was that it allowed me to watch lots of MTV and read lots of good books.  I formed a lot of opinions about music videos over my two weeks.  Here are some comments I wrote in my journal, along with the relevant music videos.

Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)- Shakira:  This would become a quasi-official anthem for the trip.  The world cup had just ended and people loved this song and the accompanying “dance” (which I don’t see in the video).   The version of this song in English (there is one in Spanish called “Waka Waka (Esto es Africa)”) is horrible. Lyrics like “If you get down/Get up Oh oh…/When you get down/Get up eh eh…” Ick.  Listen to the Spanish version.  I think it’s more catchy and better.

Ridin’ Solo- Jason Derulo: Oh Jason.  His first two videos were actually pretty good (remember them?), but then he released this.  I’m not a fan of his outfit (with the spikes coming from the shoulders) and the animation that occurs when he’s driving the car is ridiculous.  Looks like something that would have been cutting edge in the 1990s.  Also not a huge fan of dancing in front of this ridiculous light boards (other artists like this in music videos as well).

Not Afraid- Eminem: This music video was really well-done I thought.  I wrote “very clean” and “visually striking.” I appreciated how personal and emotional this song was for Eminem.

Your Love is My Drug- Ke$ha: I actually have no idea how you’re supposed to write her name.  It doesn’t matter. This video is really weird.  I suppose that fits with how I perceive Ke$ha.  Over the course of the trip, though, I would hear this song DOZENS of times.  The Italians love this hippy/ trippy song.

Because The Night- Patti Smith ft. Carmen Consoli: This song must have been recorded as part of an MTV summer concert series.  Otherwise, I cannot explain why MTV Italia would continue to show this live version of an old 1980s song.  Personally, I don’t think Patti Smith’s voice is the strongest in this clip.  Nevertheless, you could count on seeing this video at least twice a day.

Alors on Danse- Stromae: The french DJ recorded a really sweet video for his song.  I really like the multiple camera perspectives for this guy’s day.  It also shows a bit of french culture and tolerance, which is a cool thing.  This song followed us everywhere, from H&M in Siena to the discotecca on our last night in Venice.

All The Lovers- Kylie Minogue: I think this video was popular because it resembled soft porn.  The song is really boring and uninteresting.  When I stumbled on this one morning on MTV, I thought I was on the wrong channel. Lots of making out and other things going on in the video.  Love the unicorn.  Heterosexual, homosexual, it doesn’t matter. Everyone’s invited to this orgy.

California Gurls- Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg: A lot going on in this video.  I was surprised to find out that the Beach Boys were going to sue Perry and Dogg because he mentions, “I wish they all could be California girls.” At first I was sad with this video because I thought Perry had missed a great opportunity for a California beach video with lots of dancing.  But I’ve warmed to it and its’ randomness.  Why is she nude in a cloud?  Why does she shoot whipped cream from her boobs?  Why is Snoop Dogg watching over the game board?  Yet, it’s fun.  That’s all you want in a summer jam.
