Love Hurts— Hickey Paralyzes Woman

22 Jan

Attention people all over the world. Next time you’re getting busy, be careful. The New Zealand Medical Journal reports that a 44-year-old woman suffered a small, but partially paralyzing, stroke after receiving a “love bite” from her partner.

The woman was watching TV when she and her partner began kissing. Shortly after the “love bite,” she lost feeling in her left arm and went to the doctor.

Doctors couldn’t determine what caused the stroke to the woman, until they noticed a small bruise close to a major artery in the neck. They now believe that the partner’s suction caused a blood clot that traveled to her neck. Thankfully, she is expected to make a full recovery.

Scientist Hopes to Clone a Woolly Mammoth

21 Jan

A scientist in Tokyo says a breakthrough in cloning technology will allow him to bring the long-extinct woolly mammoth back to life in as little as four years.

Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University, says the technological issues have been overcome and all he needs now is “a good sample of soft tissue from a frozen mammoth.” An adult African Elephant will serve as the surrogate mother to the new mammoth.

Iritani says he needs two years before implanting the elephant, followed by a 600-day gestation period.

Old-Time Vespa and Bicycles

21 Jan

You have to love this old commercial about the Vespa. As far as I can tell, the scooter still has this effect in Italy…

Also, a new Tumblr blog, called “Rides a Bike,” launched and features celebrities riding bicycles. Who says a niche is too small to capitalize on?

What’s In That Taco? Lion Meat?

20 Jan

Yes, apparently anything goes in Arizona. Boca Tacos y Tequila, a Tuscon restaurant, plans to serve a taco filled with lion meat on Feb. 16.

Over the past 6 months, since they launched exotic meat Wednesdays, the restaurant has served tacos with python, alligator, elk, kangaroo and rattlesnake meats. Last week, owner Bryan Mazon announced that the restaurant would accept orders for the lion tacos.

“I’ve gotten a lot of questions, like if it’s legal,” said Mazon, adding that a few lion tacos have been reserved so far. “We’re still a month out, too.”

Each taco will cost $8.75 since the price of one pound of ground lion meet is $100. Apparently the past alligator and rattlesnake tacos were especially popular.

The owners plan to order the lion meat from a farm outside of Los Angeles.  Would you order a lion taco?

Scientists: 8 Percent of Fans Leave Sports Games Drunk

19 Jan

Do your personal experiences support this conclusion? Researchers at the University of Minnesota were able to use a breathalyzer on 362 sports fans leaving 3 NFL and 13 MLB games. It’s important to note that these fans were willing participants in the study, and elected to do so. If you could test unwilling, inebriated fans, the results could be even higher.

Of those sampled, 40% had some positive Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), ranging from .005 to .21, and eight percent of fans left the stadium legally drunk. The study’s lead scientist points out a startling fact: if that 8 percent holds, close to 5,000 people could leave every game too impaired to legally drive.

Fans under the age of 35 were nine times more likely to be drunk than older spectators. Attendees were also 14 times more likely to be intoxicated if they tailgated before the game. The largest percentage of positive BAC readings game after Monday-night games.
