Best and Worst April Fools Jokes

1 Apr

Best Jokes:

Lonely Planet: Introducing a new line of travel guides written entirely in LOLcat. A spokesman reportedly said: “We lovez teh world. Kittehs want to conquer it. Iz a perfect match.”

Ikea: The furniture maker has been aggressively looking at “pet furniture needs” according to this YouTube video. They created the Hundstol, or a high chair for your dog. Call me crazy, but I think people would actually buy this.

ThinkGeek: The site unveiled a mini Apple Store playset. Complete with accessories, it even features Steve Jobs making a presentation. Again, people might actually buy this.

Hulu: Awesome site design makes everything look it comes from the mid-1990s. Complete with era-appropriate TV shows as well.

Ivar’s: So this one is pretty Seattle-specific, but hilarious just the same. Unless you’ve been bured in a hole for the last few months, you know that Starbucks decided to drop all words from its logo. Well, Ivar’s appears to have copied them with this latest brand redesign.

Carl’s Jr.: The fast food chain introduces us to the “Original Six Dollar Tofu Vegan Burger.” The company boasts, “Stacked high with lettuce, mushrooms, soy cheese and julienne carrots, these mouth-watering tofu burgers will take you on a wild ride to Flavortown.”

Worst Jokes

YouTube: Really only one here. So, for their April Fools prank YouTube decided to create a page that would enable the user to relive videos from 1911. As Gawker points out, every video on the site (formerly) allowed the user to click a “1911” button that would strip things of sound and add some weird music. For some videos, this was funny. For videos about 9/11 or the recent Japanese tsunami, this was horrible. Someone didn’t think through that one very much.  On a lighter note, they did produce a funny video in the theme.

Are These April Fools Jokes?

1 Apr

I really can’t tell. Both would be horrifying (though one more so) if true.

1) Urban Improv Performer Attacked: This seems like something that could be a joke, but it seems horrifyingly real. The joke was supposed to be that an actor dressed like Jar Jar Binks jumped on the subway and began chatting with people on the car. At the next stop a character dressed as Darth Maul was supposed to board as well, followed by a fight. Unfortunately, a real fight broke out. Three guys were annoyed by Jar Jar and jumped him. Improv Everywhere employee Charlie added a disclaimer at the end of the movie and said the actor wanted to press charges. If you know anything about the incident, Improv Everywhere wants you to contact them.

2) Desperate Chefs’ Wives: So, renowned chef and restauranteur Jose Andres took to Twitter this morning, claiming that NBC ordered a show called Desperate Chefs’ Wives. It will feature the wives of Tom Colicchio, Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert, Andres and Conan O’Brien (?). Now, I would automatically assume this was an April Fools joke, but NBC makes such terrible programming decisions that there is small chance it’s true. Not likely though.

Tik Root Released From Custody

1 Apr

Good news from Damascus this morning. Middlebury College student Tik Root has been released from Syrian custody this morning, according to a press release from the College.

Root had been held by Syrian authorities for over two weeks after being detained while taking pictures at an anti-government protest. Additional details are few and far between, but this is wonderful news for the Roots, Middlebury and the United States.

Today in Sex (sNSFW)

31 Mar

Seems like there’s a lot of news about sex in recent days. Not sure why. Something in the water?

1) USC Students Caught Having Sex on Top of Building: Cameras were all around to catch this guy and gal having sex, on top of one of USC’s buildings. Why so many cameras? Well, there were hundreds of people below for a philanthropy event. The guy was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, which had its very own scandal earlier this month. If you want to see the pictures, which are most certainly NSFW, click here.

2) Student Magazine Cover Shocks Community: Editors of the University of North Florida’s Spinnaker is in deep trouble after running this picture, which simulates a woman receiving oral sex. The story was about how many young people have actually contracted HPV from oral sex and was alerting students about the dangers. Complaints have come primarily from employees and outsiders, but not from students.

3) MTV Switzerland Sex Ads: The television company ran a series of advertisements with the tagline “sex is no accident. Always wear a condom” followed by advertisements picturing accidental sexual encounters. I’m not explaining this well. Check out a sample ad or see them all here.

Gandhi Loved a Man Named Hermann Kallenbach

31 Mar

According to a new book, Mahatma Gandhi loved a German bodybuilder named Hermann Kallenbach. Though Gandhi slept in the same bed with naked women, including his naked great-niece, he rarely engaged in any sort of sexual activity with them. He left his wife in 1908 for Kallenbach.

In one letter, Gandhi told Kallenbach about “how completely you have taken possession of my body. This is slavery with a vengeance. Your portrait (the only one) stands on my mantelpiece in my bedroom.”

They were forced apart in 1914, but as late as 1933 Gandhi wrote Kallenbach about how much he cared for him.
